Title: Public hunting area program in Tennessee - a corporate landowner's perspective.
Year: 1986
Abstract: In 1982, the Tennessee legislature passed a law (Tennessee Code Annotated 70-5-101) establishing the Public Hunting Area Program. This law gives Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency the authority to sign an agreement with a private landowner to oversee the public hunting on that property and to prosecute violators who litter or damage that property. On June 3, 1983, Westvaco Corporation became the first Tennessee landowner to sign an agreement with TWRA putting 52,000 acres into the Public Hunting Area Program. An additional 30,000 acres of Westvaco land was added in 1984. This program offers a viable alternative to closing lands to public hunting. Experiences of the Company with the program are discussed in detail.
